Eletronics and Communication Engineering Labs

Research plays an important role in the educational experience and provides practical skills for future employment of engineering students. The lab is set up with the objective to motivate and encourage students to take up research projects based on innovative ideas. This provides a platform for ECE students to participate in groundbreaking research with faculty.

The Electronic Design and Automation Laboratory works under the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering. This laboratory with 60 high-end computers and a server class machine has in it a set of expensive design and simulation softwares like Matlab, Orcad, WinXP, Codecomposer Studio, ActivHDL and so on to cater to the departmental research and development activities.

Software for a wide area of research via Signal Processing, VLSI and Embedded Systems have found wide applications in the EDA Lab. Student centric learning kits Like BLOOM with DSP from Cranes Softwares are also licensed to be used within the laboratory.

The EDA Laboratory has also in its possession an array of hardware utilities like Texas Instruments TMS320C6713 based Digital Signal Processors, XILINX SPARTAN-3 based Field Programmable Gate Arays, XILINX COOL RUNNER â€' II CPLD, IAR Systems ARM Processors and so on. A number of student projects and faculty projects have been designed, tested and prototype developed in the Electronic Design and Automation Laboratory.

Communication laboratory has the most priority among the various labs in the curriculum of Electronics and communication engineering students for undergraduate courses. It handles various practical experiments in the field of microwave engineering and optical fiber communication.

Apart from the curriculum related laboratory exercises, students use the laboratory for the mini-project, main-project implementations. The Communication laboratory has also in its possession an array of various different devices like Optical Fiber Trainer kit, Microwave Benches, TV Trainer kit, Satellite Communication Trainer kit, PLC Trainer kit, Various Types of Modulation kits etc.

The rapid development within the field of Embedded Systems Design that has taken place over the last years offers new possibilities for designers of Home Appliances, Industrial monitoring and controlling devices, Medical Instrumentations etc.

The department of Electronics and Communication is setting a full-fledged Embedded Systems lab keeping in mind the current trend so as to produce industry ready employees. The lab will be one of its first kinds, amongst the engineering colleges of Kerala. The lab will have processors with 8bit, 16bit and 32bit processing capabilities. The lab will be equipped   with most sophisticated development boards for final year projects of the B.Tech and M. Tech students. The lab is aiming to design good quality products for the present electronics market.

This lab is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and high-end processor kits like ARM and DSP.

The department of Electronics and Communication Engineering has a fully fledged product development laboratory. The lab has all facilities which provide a clear cut idea of the processes behind the Electronic Product Design. The lab caters to the requirement of students for carrying out mini-project and major project in the department itself.  The lab stocks all required items to make models of the products before actual fabrication.

The Analog Circuits Lab caters to the requirement of the students with respect to various lab sessions. The lab has all the required equipment and consumables to carry out the experiments as per the syllabus as well as a few experiments beyond the syllabus.

At a time a batch of 30 students do the experiments. The students are divided into batches of two. Different charts related to the experiments done in the lab, photographs of the inventers related to electronics devices and Linear Integrated Circuits and instructions for carrying out experiments in the lab are displayed.

An engineer who wants to understand existing digital circuits or to design new ones needs to know the basic operations of digital electronics. Digital Electronics Laboratory is fully equipped with the required instruments such as C.R.O., multimeters, signal Generator etc. to conduct experiments with digital ICs for UG students. Digital electronics is also the base of computer technology. Today complete computers on a single chip, called microcontrollers, bring "intelligence" to many products of our daily use.

As an innovative practice of the department, a maintenance wing is set up. The wing looks after the maintenance of all the equipment in the department. All the activities of the wing are well documented. Most of the repairing of the equipment is done by the wing itself, except a few repairing where, the work has to be done by the manufacturing company itself.

Linear Integrated Circuits Lab

A course in Linear Integrated Circuits is an essential part of a well-rounded electronics and communication engineering and electrical engineering curriculum. With hands-on experiments significantly improving the understanding and visualization of complex subject matters, a series of laboratory experiments have been developed.

The Linear Integrated circuits course (XEC 407) has been taught as a required course for electronics and communication engineering and electrical and electronics engineering students.

The Linear Integrated Circuits lab course introduces the concept and application of operational amplifiers. Laboratory assignments clarify textbook formulas and examples, as well as help to close the gap between theory and real-life problems. With these considerations in mind a laboratory workbook has been developed at the Periyar Maniammai University for the linear Integrated Circuits course.

VLSI Design Lab

To address the shortage in embedded and VLSI engineers in booming electronic product development market, a high-end VLSI  has been set up.  Various software to support the hardware is also present in the lab. The lab can accommodate 60 students per batch.

Basic Electronics Lab

This laboratory lays the foundation for the Electronics and Communication Engineering students during the first and second year of their course. Basic electronic equipments used in electronics laboratory are:

·       Cathode Ray Oscilloscope to view and measure AC waveforms.

·       Function Generator used to design, develop and to trouble shoot electronic equipments .

·       Regulated power supply to supply AC/DC voltage and current to electronic circuits.

·       Breadboard to mount the components temporarily for experimental work.

·       IC Trainer kits to design sequential and combinational logic circuits.

·       Buck boost converter and Fly back converter to produce larger voltage than the input voltage.
